Descriptionp38 mitogen-activated protein kinases (p38 MAPKs) are a group of serine/threonine protein kinases that together with ERK (extracellular signal-regulated kinases) and JNK (c-Jun N-terminal kinases) MAPKs act to convert different extracellular signals into specific cellular responses through interacting with and phosphorylating downstream targets. Four isoforms of p38 MAP kinase, p38-alpha (MAPK14), p38-beta (MAPK11), p38-gamma (MAPK12 or ERK6), and p38-delta (MAPK13 or SAPK4), have been identified. p38 delta/MAPK13 belongs to the MAP kinase subfamily of protein kinase superfamily. p38 delta/MAPK13 is the major p38 isoform driving suprabasal involucrin gene expression and that p38 delta directly regulates ERK1/2 activity via formation of a p38 delta-ERK1/2 complex. As a regulator of surface epithelia differentiation and apoptosis, p38 delta/MAPK13 is a regulator of differentiation-dependent gene expression in keratinocytes. In addition, p38 delta/MAPK13 has important role in promoting cell proliferation and tumor development in epidermis.
